LiveLighter Aged Care Games

The LiveLighter Aged Care Games are set up to provide an opportunity for people in 'care' situations to experience team participation and light competition, as well as social interaction, through adapted games in a community recreation facility.

In 2003, Seniors Recreation Council of WA established Games for Seniors in Care as part of the Fremantle Masters Games and included the games seated hockey, seated pass ball, bean bag toss & skittles.

Agencies participating in the games find that during the months leading up to the event they work with the clients to practice each of the games. The agencies have their own equipment which include hockey sticks (1/2 pool noodle), 6” ball, skittles and beanbags & beanbag mat, (made by the agency). They also dedicate time and effort to develop uniforms, flags, signs etc. anything to help them be chosen as the ‘Best Presented Team’

With a perpetual trophy (Cup) and small replica plus Gold medals awarded to the winners and Silver and Bronze medals awarded to the runners up & third place all other participants receive a participation medal.

The City of Fremantle in 2007 offered a perpetual trophy for the Champion of Champions team, (the team that has the most points in a round of competition) this was presented for the first time at the Fremantle Masters Aged Care Games 2007 and has been presented each year since. The Champion of Champions winners are:- 2006/07 Barridale Lodge, 07/08 Jacaranda Lodge, 08/09 Jacaranda Lodge, 09/10 Vivianne Bulwinkel Lodge, 10/11 MYVISTA & 11/12 Ritcher Lodge.

The Council has developed strong working alliances to present the games including Department of Sport and Recreation of WA, Healthway, Heart Foundation, Department of Local Government and Communities, Have a Go News, various Local Governments and numerous care agencies.

This is an exciting program and it has been very well received by both clients living in care and the Care Agencies, these events have been conducted over the last ten years.

Since the games commenced in 2003 SRC has hosted 40 competitions with a total of 9000 people attending the games to June 2012.

Once again SRC and all participants in the games wish to express their appreciation to the sponsors of the LiveLighter Aged Care Games – Healthway,  Department of Sport & Recreation & Department of Local Government and Communities, Have a Go News, Local Governments & support agencies.

LiveLighter Metro Aged Care Games 2017 Sets New Record Attendance.

The 2017 Metro LiveLighter Aged Care Games were officially opened by Hon Mick Murray, Minister for Seniors and Ageing, Volunteering and Sport and Recreation. Minister Mick Murray walked around chatted with people from all the teams and wished them all well.

Teams from around the metro region competed in a range of games which were organised and facilitated by staff and volunteers from SRCWA. It was amazing to see people well into their 90’s willing to Have a Go at Seated Hockey, Pass Ball, Bean Bag Toss and Skittles. As you will see from some of the images participants had a great day and there were smiles all round.

The team taking out First Place was “Frederick Guest”, Second Place was “Balmoral Royals” and closely followed in Third Place by “Harman Park Community Centre”. The oldest competitor at the games was 104-year-old Nell Bentley from Rosewood. Best presented team was Ritcher Lodge “Ritcher Cowboys” who went to a lot of trouble theming the whole team as Cowboys and Cowgirls. Our thanks go out to the many volunteers helped set up and officiate at these games, a special thank you to participating centres staff who train and support participants.

Thank you to LiveLighter Healthway, Dept of Communities and Dept of Local Government, Sport & Cultural Industries for Sponsoring the LiveLighter Aged Care Games events
