Seniors Can’t Get Enough of Technology

Eighty Perth seniors were getting Tech Savvy. For the past few years the Seniors Recreation Council of WA (SRCWA) have been quenching a huge thirst for knowledge among Perth seniors to master modern technology. In partnership with Telstra, SRCWA continue to deliver free technology based workshops specifically for seniors. The aim of this workshop was to help break down barriers and close the gap created by the ever increasing digital divide experienced by the older generation, who in most cases have had little or no exposure to current technology.

The session held on Friday 16th January 2018, was fully booked out within four days of being announced. The official opening was by the Hon. Martin Brian Pritchard MLC, Member for North Metropolitan Region who address the seniors on behalf of Hon. Michael (Mick) Philip Murray MLA , Minister for Seniors and Ageing; Volunteering; Sport and Recreation.

The session started with an overview of benefits and pitfalls of a connected environment eg Google Home, National Broadband Network status with Q&A, Boyd Brown Telstra Area General Manager WA also presented at the event. Telstra digital ambassadors were on hand to facilitate small break out groups where seniors explored and tried technology and asked relevant questions. Seniors were thrilled to be able to take part in these sessions and there was a real buzz and positive vibe around the room as seniors explore their options and what technology can do for them. Static displays at this event: Community Education Team, Consumer Protection Division, Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety Camera Electronic – Cameras and advice for seniors Telstra NBN Co. There were lots of prizes at the end of the event courtesy of Telstra, a Google Home Mini, HP Tablet and tickets to the Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) concert.

A big thank you to Telstra and its Digital Ambassadors, NBN Co Consumer Protection WA, Camera Electronic, and all the SRCWA volunteers for their efforts in making this a great event.

Telstra Connecting Seniors
Afternoon Tea

Tuesday 24th January 2017 saw some 60 seniors welcomed by CEO of Telstra Andrew Penn to a Connecting Seniors – Afternoon Tea run in partnership with Telstra and Seniors Recreation Council of WA Inc, we were also joined by AMANA Living and Bethany. Seniors at this free event learned about current connectivity options, an overview of smartphones and tablets, and their benefits and relevance to everyday life. Around twenty Telstra Digital Ambassadors took small breakout groups for sessions where they could explore and ask relevant technology questions and received advice on personal phones or tablets which they brought to the event. On behalf of all those who attended, Seniors Recreation Council of WA Inc. would like to thank Telstra for their continued invaluable support in helping to break down the barriers many seniors may have moving into the digital age.

Tech Savvy Seniors
Intro
duction to Tecnology

Tech Savvy Seniors “Introduction to Technology” is a new initiative for Seniors Recreation Council of WA Inc, which aims to gently introduce Seniors to the benefits of modern technology.

Computers and electronic devices are an integral part of our society and in some cases this lack of knowledge can lead to social isolation and a lack of mental stimulation.

In an effort to help alleviate some of the barriers Seniors Recreation Council of WA Inc in partnership with Healthway, Department for Sport and Recreation, Department for Local Government and Communities and Telstra provide free Introduction to Technology Courses.

How it Works

Participants receive their own course workbook to keep for future reference. We come to the organising groups venue and provide our equipment, this way people don't have to travel too far. Each topic runs for two hours with a twenty minute break (two one hour sessions) to allow for a drink.
Up to six computers can be provided for small groups to practice on or individuals may bring along their own laptops. Ideally we prefer to have people who have little or no experience with computers.

Course Outline

1. What is a Computer and its associated equipment?

2. Basic introduction on how to use a computer.

3. Internet Use – Email, Browsers, Security and Scams.

4. Facebook introduction  how we can connect with our families and friends.

5. Skype Introduction - How to make free local and international video calls.

6. Digital Camera -  What to do with all those pictures, saving and sharing them.

What do you need to do?

Contact Seniors Recreation Council of WA Inc on 9492 9773 and arrange a meeting and secure a date as time slots are limited. Arrange six to ten people who have little or no experience with computers or the internet, who can attend for  four to six weeks. Provide a room or area which can be used for the training.
We need a venue with six tables and enough chairs for the participants (not required if you have your own computer room).
Arrange safe access to electricity and provide a beverage and biscuit for the break.
